With the increasing sturdiness of plate armor, the sword became less and less effective against a fully armored knight. Hammers, axes and maces soon became the weapon of choice for hand-to-hand combat of the mounted knight. The war hammer quickly evolved and became one of the premier weapons. Generally it was lighter and faster than the mace and this example is no exception.

The English Warhammer is based on an original dating from about 1530 and features a carbon steel head secured to a hardwood shaft with a leather wrapped grip and a steel end cap.

Fast lil hammer…. You don’t need bulk when you have speed. This little hammer, that I got second hand, is an awesome weapon for its size. Very quick and responsive. Packs a wallop on some armor. They could have used better wood, but the handle COULD be replaced if it were to break. I doubt that will happen unless you’re using it on a construction/demolition site to bust concrete…..McM

Good steel, lousy wood. Just for kicks, swung this a few times to break up some ice on my roof. Not very hard obviously. Handle disintegrated. Big rotten knot in the middle of the wood.

Order this and really impressed with it. I have a collection of 5 war hammers now and this is by far my favorite. I have not tried to beat on anything like a brick with it, but against soft targets the handle my warhammer is doing fine. Light and fast, but heavy enough to do some damage. For the price, the best warhammer you can get IMHO

Giving this a tentative 5 star review, with the caveat that I have not had a chance to /really/ test this thing yet. The over all quality is better than I expected for the price. Sturdily built.

The quality of the handle on my copy seems quite good. I’m by no means an expert, but the other comments mention poor quality wood that broke up easily and I don’t see that at all. Granted the hardest thing I’ve hit with it was a Valencia juice orange (quite satisfying), but the wood looks and feels dense and sturdy to me.

Light and quick, can easily be one-handed if you have a strong grip and arm, plenty of handle space for two-handed use. The pick(?) is neither sharp nor dull, won’t make you bleed if you stick your thumb on it, but would easily punch through sheet metal or light plate with a good swing. Hammer head is small but solid and seems effective (against oranges, anyway).

I may re-wrap the handle, but over all this is a really cool hammer that’s fun and easy to swing around, at a price that is more than fair.
