Kult of Athena will be closing until further notice as we comply with the mandatory Shelter in Place order issued by the Illinois Governor. We will not be taking new orders until we reopen. We do not know precisely when we will be allowed to reopen but we hope it is soon. We were trying to continue operating with a reduced staff, but that has proven not to be possible.
**Customers with existing orders: All existing orders will be filled, and we hope to have all in stock orders shipped by the end of the week or early next.
We will be checking emails during this time, so if you need to get hold of us please email orders@kultofathena.com. We hope everyone is staying as safe as they can out there and we very much hope to be open again soon.

1095 High Carbon Steel

With a spiraling array of blades and spikes, the devious design of the hurlbat leaves little chance for a ricochet or a bounce when striking its target. An intimidating weapon that seems to have derived from the 14th-15th Century German imagination, the Hurlbat is a cruciform-like throwing axe that strikes with accuracy and armor-piercing force in capable hands. It was known by other names as well, such as the Wurfhaken (throwing hook) or the more devilish ‘’Mordhaken’’, the ‘’Murder Hook’’ - a moniker that gives some insight into the perception of this unique medieval weapon. Not limited to Germany the Hurlbat is also well represented in Eastern Europe, particularly Bohemia and Hungary.

This Hurlbat by Devil’s Edge is crafted from tempered 1095 high carbon steel; the all-steel, one-piece construction ensures that is quite robust. The axe blade, back spike and top spike are all sharpened to a keen edge. The longer handle is left blunted and with a thickened edge for safety when held or when leaving the hand in a throw. The handle does end in a tapered point which is capable of embedding itself into the target with a good throw. The slim, flat profile of the hurlbat also allows several of them to be carried with ease, or fitted into a holster in the back of a shield.
